Welcome to the Thread Weave Pattern Archive - a Note from Doc Ski
Well, it has taken some time to put this all together, but we finally have the Thread Weave Pattern Archive files ready for you all to download and use as you wish. I tried to edit the file folders in a way that keeps things clean and simple. I have included two files for each pattern, but there may be as many as six or more patterns in each folder. Also included in each folder are jpeg screenshots of each file/pattern so you can see my rendition of the weave. There are also patterns from other renowned thread weave artists in the Dropbox folder list. Where I was sure who made the pattern, I tried to include their name.
Patterns are all in the PicToWeave file format so you will need to download the free application to open the files. The application can be downloaded from the first folder in the Dropbox titled “-PicToWeave Software”. The PicToWeave application was created by weave artist Owen Dare. It’s user friendly and has a very robust Help>Contents section explaining how to work with pattern files, and explains terms such as left list, layer list, grid cells, and so on.
You will find some of the patterns display fish in colors that look nothing like the real fish. I sometimes do this just to keep the layers easy to see if you choose to do your work using the left list. A prime example: ask someone if wahoo have white/silver stripes or black or other color, so I leave that up to each of you. I am far from perfect so if you find a glitch of some kind please report it to me or the Batson staff and I will see if I can help make it right. The great thing about these patterns being in the PicToWeave file format is that changes can be made quickly. This means fixes or personal customizations can be done quicky and you can instantly generate a new left list.
Some have asked why I chose to publish this massive archive of thread weave patterns. Well, I remember when I started my custom rod business VERY few builders would share knowledge. I just want to help increase interest in our craft and get more people involved so we will have more new ideas and techniques to explore. Finally, I want to thank all the rod building artists who have graciously offered their patterns to this project. Many of these folks are among the top custom rod builders in the world, and as many of you will find out, making patterns is very time consuming. Making a pattern from scratch can take many hours to develop and make usable which makes their donation to my project all the more amazing. Lastly, a big thank you to Bill Batson and the entire Batson Enterprises Team for facilitating a way to make these patterns easily accessible to the rod building world. On a personal note, when you use a pattern and publish the results it would be a nice gesture to give kudos to the designer via social media etc. That doesn't take away from your hard work in producing your builds. I am sure those who donated some or all of their life's work would be grateful for the recognition. That’s it for now, and happy rod building. Thank you
-Doc Ski
P.S. I encourage everyone to check out the video interview Bill Batson and I did about this collection of patterns. It includes some additional detail and history surrounding the project. I hope builders enjoy using these patterns as much as we enjoyed creating them.
